Etched PTFE Sheet

For specialized applications especially where bonding polytetrafluoroethylene sheets seems a challenge, then etching PTFE solves the problem. Simply put, etched PTFE sheets have a rough surface on either one or both sides.

That is, the etched PTFE sheet manufacturers use special chemicals to treat either virgin PTFE sheets or filled PTFE sheets. At the moment, sodium solution remains popular for etching PTFE sheets.

Usually, etching is a phenomenon that appears after a chemical reaction that:

  1. Removed fluorine molecules from the surface – remember, PTFE materialhas a strong backbone made from a carbon-fluorine bond
  2. A combination of oxygen and hydrogen in water vapor reacts to replace the fluorine molecules. Resulting in a restored surface with molecules that are reactive and allow for easy adhesion.

Remember, the chemical only affects the topmost layer of the etched PTFE sheet. Therefore, the desirable properties of PTFE material remain the same.

The roughening of the PTFE sheets surface enhances adhesion properties making it suitable for:

  • Sealing and vessel lining – this is due to superior chemically inert properties, non-stick properties, and good thermal properties
  • Gaskets – they are chemically inert with excellent thermal properties
  • Slider bearing – due to low friction co-efficient
  • Electrical parts – this is due to excellent insulation properties

Other applications may include workbenches, shelves, worn surfaces, etc.

Even if you want specialized parts, you can still machine etched PTFE sheets to make any component. Usually, etching is the final step after manufacturing the polytetrafluoroethylene sheets:

  • Molded PTFE sheets
  • Skived PTFE sheets
  • Extruded PTFE sheets
